Mike Sutherland is a third generation Colorado native who graduated from the University of Denver with honors with a B.S.B.A. in Business Management in 1981. He then earned his law degree at the University of Denver in 1984.
Mike began his legal career with Demoulin, Anderson, Campbell and Laugesen as a law clerk in 1982. He became an associate attorney with the firm in 1984. From 1989 to 1991, Mike was a sole practitioner, emphasizing the areas of workers' compensation, probate and estate planning, and title insurance defense. He joined the firm of Weinberger & Kanan, P.C. in 1991, where he was a shareholder from 1995 to 1998, also serving as secretary and financial director while continuing to practice in the areas of insurance defense, workers' compensation, probate and estate planning. He rejoined Anderson, Campbell and Laugesen, P.C. as a shareholder in 1998. The firm became Sutherland Tarler & Laugesen, P.C. in 2001, and Mike was the managing shareholder through July 2006. In August, 2006, he became Special Counsel to Inman Flynn Biesterfeld & Brentlinger, P.C. Mike became a shareholder in the firm in January, 2008. He continues to practice in the areas of estate planning and administration, probate litigation, workers' compensation and insurance defense.
Mike serves as a hearing officer for the Fire and Police Pension Association of Colorado and the Denver Employees Retirement Plan. He has lectured at seminars on workers' compensation for Lorman Education Services.
Mike currently serves on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the City of Centennial, Colorado. He is past president and past secretary-treasurer of the Park Hill Improvement Association, Inc., and he has served on the boards of Foxridge Improvement Association, the Centennial Council of Neighborhoods, and St. Thomas More School Advisory Council. Mike is active in church and Catholic education organizations.
Mike enjoys history, hiking, biking and skiing with his wife, Kathy, and his three children. He also enjoys watching his children's sports and extra-curricular activities.
