Some Things Should Not Be Kept Secret:  Locating Estate Documents

- Dee Biesterfeld, Estate Planning

When the time comes for families to locate important estate planning documents for a loved one, they often find that those documents are locked away in a safe deposit box or other secured location to which the family has no access.  If you decide to keep your documents locked up, be sure to give someone you trust the ability to access those documents in the event that you are unable to do so.

This can be accomplished by adding the trusted person as a signer on the safe deposit box, or by simply providing that person with the information regarding where and how those important documents can be found.  Failing to leave this basic information may result in a delay in getting important documents to medical providers or the administration of your estate.
